Brand New All Day Class!

Instructor: Rob Domaschuk

Description:

Building upon the successful Elements of Composition class, this next step explores in much greater detail the techniques used to strengthen the composition of your photographs.

By now, you are "beyond the snapshot" with your photography but are you getting consistently strong images? Are you finding that you still throw away far more images than you keep? Do you see a scene that you want to shoot but you still are left wondering how to frame it?

If so, you may want to consider taking this class!

Like all of our classes, this session is very much a hands-on class with much of the day practicing the specific techniques learned in the presentation. However, this will be more than just a high-level overview of basic technical steps.

What Will Be Covered:

  • Identifying a primary subject and, when appropriate, secondary and tertiary subjects
  • Separating your subject from the background through a variety of techniques
  • Controlling the depth of field (DoF) to achieve your desired image
  • Understanding the technical details of DoF to help with compositional decision-making
  • Understanding, and using, hyperfocal distances and minimum focus distances for your different lenses
  • Working with the Inverse Square Law of Light to understand how light ratios affect composition
  • Using light meters to read light and shadows and using that information in your composition
  • Knowing when it's okay to break the rule of thirds
  • Learning how to slow your shooting down and frame your image in camera
  • Using props effectively to stage your subject and not "upstage" your subject
  • Learning how to frame the scene for different photographic genres
  • Lenses and how they affect composition

Who Should Attend:

This class is suitable for anyone wishing to expand their composition skills. If you've taken some strong images but are not doing so consistently, this would be a good class to take. If you are brand new to photography, you may be better served by either taking Elements of Composition first or contacting the instructor for a reading list prior to the class.

Required Gear:

You, your camera (any kind will do), your camera's manual, and something to write with.

Optional Gear:

Flash, tripod
